Traveling and Feeding Newborn Babies

Once upon a time, a new mother was relegated to laying in a bed for 4-6 weeks after the birth of her baby. Other than trips to the bathroom, she wasn't supposed to get out of bed and would have her baby brought to her. Now it's different.

It's not uncommon for new mothers to take their newborns out and even travel. Traveling with a newborn can present some special concerns. Your baby really doesn't care where you are when she's hungry and you'll have to make some choices if you choose to travel with your newborn whether you go by plane or car to get to your destination.

There are numerous nursing garments, many double as baby slings where you can hold your baby, nurse her and most people in a public area will be none-the-wiser. Certain airports around the US have designated breast feeding areas and a third choice a breast feeding mother can make is to pump her breast milk and bottle feed her baby.

Formula fed newborns have it much easier. Simply pack your sterile bottles, pack your dry formula and mix with water. Many airlines can your water for you. Never give your baby a bottle that has been warmed in a microwave. The bottle can continue to heat from the center and you could burn your baby's mouth also there is good evidence that plastic bottles can leach chemicals into your baby's formula.

Traveling and feeding newborn babies can be easy. Just decide how you intend to feed your baby and plan ahead. That way you're prepared for your baby and you can enjoy your trip.
